Industrial Wastewater System

Industrial wastewater generally includes machine oils, metalworking fluids (emulsifiable, semi-synthetic and synthetic), alkaline cleaners, solvents (kerosene, citrus, terpine), and cleansers etc. Often wastewater is treated before it is discharged to surface waters, sent through sewers to POTW (publicly owned treatment works), sent to the atmosphere (incineration, evaporation) or transported to treatment facilities. POTW regulate and will only accept specified amounts of organic (BOD, COD, TOC etc.) and inorganic (metals, arsenic, cyanide, nitrates, sulfates, TDS) waste requiring industry to pretreat many waste streams. Three treatment methods are used; evaporation (distillation), chemical and membrane. Cleaning up industrial waste streams is difficult and expensive. As a generalization, distillation does by far the best job at eliminating dissolved organics, a good job with solvents, and a less good job breaking the oil emulsion bond to remove concentrated oils. Chemicals and filtration do a poor job removing dissolved organics, solvents and cleaners. Traditionally evaporation has been viewed as the most expensive of the three alternatives because evaporators simply boil off the water and capture little, if any, of the latent heat. In general, pretreatment by micro or ultrafiltration, cavitation or other processes to remove concentrated oils followed by energy efficient distillation to remove remaining oils, organics and solvents is the preferred method in many applications.
